Outline of Our Study:
(Each Friday the week's study will also be linked here)
Each week will generally focus on one day:
On the first day of the Jewish week (Sunday) Jesus and His followers approach Jerusalem. Although Jesus now approaches Jerusalem, His journey towards these events were planned from the beginning. These events occurred approximately 2000 years ago yet they continue to be the focus of religion and politics today.
His first act was to cleanse the Temple, heal people and judge the unfaithful of Israel.
It is so appropriate that as King / Messiah, Jesus did not "go up to the court or the palace, but to the temple of God; for His Kingdom is spiritual, and not (to be found in the things) of this world." (Matthew Henry)
The Jewish leaders increase their opposition to Jesus who has proclaimed Himself as the Messiah (Day One) and pronounced judgment of them (Day Two). Now they pose questions which seem innocent. However, Jesus who sees the heart, knows their real intent is to question His authority and entrap Him. We will study the parables He uses to respond to their attacks.
As far as we know on Wednesday the Lord spent in seclusion at Bethany (His arrest was fast approaching). We will continue studying what Jesus taught on Tuesday.
Jesus lamented Jerusalem’s long history of rejecting the prophets and messengers of God. He then prophesied that Jerusalem’s "house" will be left desolate.
In these verses, Jesus speaks to His disciples as well as to the Pharisees. What He taught was meant to help all believers avoid the errors of the Pharisees. Also Jesus teaches us the signs of His 2nd coming that all those who follow woud be prepared!
Jesus knows His time is short; in fact, on that very day He will begin what is referred as His "Passion" (His suffering, arrest, trials, and crucifixion). However, we will see His entire focus is on instructing and encouraging His disciples to prepare them (and us) for His departure.
The High Priests and their followers work through Thursday night to put together some kind of case against Jesus.
The Christ will stand "trial" at least 5 times. Jesus remains quiet…Surely He knew He could have escaped execution, if He would just have remained so. However, it is at this precise moment Jesus in all His solemn majesty steps forward and clearly states He is the "Son of God". Even knowing they would consider this blasphemy for which the Hebrew Law would require His death.
Jesus died at 3pm Friday, and it was now Sunday morning; 3 days since His death. Remember, He had told His disciples numerous times that He would be killed and that He would rise again!
We will study Jesus Resurrection, the accounts of His being with His disciples even many days later, and finally His Ascension!
However, this is not the end. It was the time of Pentecost and the fire of promised Holy Spirit sweeps over His disciples.
A faith and a Church are born!
Overview: LIfe Lessons of Holy Week - Beginning February 15th!
We use Lent as an opportiunity to place our needs, fears, failures, hopes; our very lives into God’s hands, again. To recognize and respond anew to God’s presence. Breaking through on Easter Sunday, with a fresh victory and hope that goes beyond rabbits, new clothes and Spring!
During our study we will see Jesus fulfill the plan of redemption revealed thousands of years before in the Garden of Eden (Genesis Chapter 3)! Jesus had told His disciples more than once:
Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and there the Son of man must be betrayed.
We will examine how Jesus chose to spend each day of this important week even knowing He would be crucified!
Holy Week begins with Jesus riding into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and His being hailed as King. We will examine the significance of what Jesus chooses to teach. We will watch as He presides over the Passover Supper He intends as a sacrament for future generations.
We will observe His actions as He stands trial and is condemned to death. Then celebrate with Him as He is raised again on Resurrection Sunday! Yet this is not the end of the Easter story.
After Jesus resurrection, He will continue to provide important teachings to His disciples. Only then will He ascend to His Father in heaven! It is then, that the promised Holy Spirit comes and the Church begins!
