Outline of our 8 week study, beginning Sept 28th
(Each Friday the week's study will also be linked here)
Part One: Life and Times of Abram - While in Mesopotamia or Ur, Abram is called by an unseen God to leave his country and people and go to an unknown land (Acts 7:2-4). He with his family sets out from Mesopotamia but settles in Haran. Both Ur and Haran were idolatrous cities who worshipped the "moon-god". There are Life Lessons even from this early part of Abram's life!
Part Two: The Call of Abram (Chapter 12-14) - At age of 75, Abram is again asked to leave his homeland, family, to go to a land he does not know. At the time, this God promises that Abram's descendents will bless all peoples of the earth (Genesis 12:3). Will Abram go? Will he trust God? What other promises are made to Abram?
Part Three: Abram Becomes Abraham (Chapter 15-17) - Abram has waited many years and does not even have one son! In disbelief, Abram and his wife hatch a plan in which Abram would have a child by a maid servant (Hagar). A son, Ishmael is born. What are the Life Lessons and implications of Abram's and his wife's actions? Why did God change Abram's name to Abraham? What is this Abrahamic covenant fulfilled by Jesus, the Christ?
Part Five: Isaac Born and Ishmael Banished (Chapter 20-24) - Abraham is approx. 100 years old, before God's provides a rightful heir (Isaac). However, now in a dramatic test of Abraham's faith God asks Abraham to send Ishmael away; and to sacrifice Isaac! How can this be... it is through Isaac that all of Abraham's promises were to come! Why did God wait so long to provide Isaac? Why did God asks Abraham to sacrifice Isaac?
Part Six: Jacob's Journey (Chapter 25-36) - Genesis then provides an account of Abraham's main descendents which includes Isaac, his son Jacob, and his 12 sons. In two instances God establishes His covenant with Isaac. However, it is Jacob whose name God will change to "Israel" and who will become the father of the 12 sons / tribes of Israel. However, the name Jacob means "schemer". Jacob / Israel will scheme and wrestle with both God and man.
Part Seven: Joseph God's In Control (Chapter 37-41) - One of the 12 sons of Israel is Joseph. Joseph dreams that he would rule even his own family! In response, Joseph is sold into slavery by his own brothers. Yet, even in slavery Joseph walks in the favor of God ! We learn from Joeseph how to walk in the favor of God even in the hard times.
Part Eight: Jacob's Blessings and Closing Thoughts (Chapter 42-50) - After 17 years in Egypt, Jacob prepares to die. He draws his sons around him to bless them. We will see that Jacob/Israel's blessing predicts, with unflinching accuracy Jesus, who will come hundreds of years later to save humanity! We will also examine the many other Life Lessons of Joseph:
"In all things God works for the good of those that love Him." (Romans 8:28).
These Chapters will also provide important information on the development of the nation of Israel.
Overview:
God uses Genesis to lay the foundation for all Scripture!
"Genesis" comes from the Hebrew name for the Book which means "Beginnings". This name is appropriate, given Genesis speaks of the beginning of: heaven and earth, light and darkness, seas and skies, land and vegetation, sun, moon and stars, air, animals, and human beings (who are created in the image of God)!
However, from the heights of creation, Genesis describes mankind's fall and the immediate consequences. The world will no longer reflect God's perfect creation, as mankind introduces: illness, death and war.... A low point is reached when "every inclination of the thoughts of his (mankind's) heart was only evil all the time". It is only then, during Noah's time that a flood was sent to destroy this unsalvageable generation.
However, it is also at this low point that God's love begins to unveil His perfect plan for His people's redemption. God shifts His focus from the scattered nations to His dealings with one man, Abram. It is Abram's descendents who will become His "chosen people" the 12 tribes of Israel. It is through His relationship with these chosen people, that God intends to: 1) reveal Himself to the rest of the world as the one true living God 2) provide a descendent Jesus the Christ, Savior of the world!
